Soils Study Guide

List of Study Materials

Each Envirothon team should have access to a soils study kit consisting of:

  1. Introductory text about RI Envirothon soils section - five pages, by Everett Stuart
     
  2. "Soils of Rhode Island Landscapes", by William Wright & Ed Sautter, Univ. of Rhode Island, (Jan. 1988, 42 pages)  Includes wall size General Soil Map of RI
     
  3. "Soil Survey of Rhode Island" (July 1981, USDA-Soil Conservation Service)
     
  4. "Important Farmlands of Rhode Island", USDA-Soil Conservation Service, Oct. 1993
     
  5. "Hydric Soil Map Units of Rhode Island", USDA - Natural Resources Conservation Service, August 1996
     
  6. "Soil Erosion by Water", Agric. Information Bulletin No. 513, USDA, Soil Conservation Service
     
  7. "Soil Erosion by Wind", Agric. Information Bulletin No. 555, USDA, Soil Conservation Service
     
  8. "Earth Colors" soil color book (published by Color Communications, Inc.) and a 3 page text about soil colors . One color book is loaned to each Envirothon school or organization. (The color books were donated to the RI Envirothon by the Soc. of Soil Scientists of Southern New England and by a grant from the Champlin Foundations.)
     
  9. Soil Texture Samples: Each Envirothon team should have a kit of six soil texture samples accompanied by a two page explanation (one page about the samples and a one page flow chart labeled "Soil Texture by Feel"). Each sample consists of about 2 cups of soil in a small plastic container. The six samples are of: silty clay loam, silt loam, fine sandy loam, sandy loam, loamy sand, sand and gravel. Samples provided by USDA - Natural Resources Conservation Service, Warwick, RI.  Refills are available.
     
  10. Soil Quality Information Sheets:
    A series of 8 single page info sheets published by USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service, April 1996. The eight titles are:

    Soil Quality - Introduction
    Indicators for Soil Quality Evaluation
    Soil Quality Indicators: Organic Matter
    Soil Quality Indicators: Aggregate Stability
    Soil Quality Indicators: Soil Crusts
    Soil Quality Resource Concerns: Soil Erosion
    Soil Quality Resource Concerns: Compaction
    Soil Quality Resource Concerns: Sediment Deposition on Cropland
     
  11. "Soil Biology Primer", USDA – Natural Resources Conservation Service, August, 1999. Approx. 50 pages. (or the reprinted version by the Soil and Water Conservation Society, 2000. Either version is OK.)

    A web site with a host of soils information. Of particular interest is the "Resources" section which includes educational materials for students elementary though 12th grade.
